This is country's only wildlife sanctuary within the city's limits. The Deer Park, 595 acres in extent is situated adjacent to the Raj Bhavan, was originally a part of the governor's estate.
In between are a famous cancer institute, a children's park with it's own mini zoo and mini-railway, a snake Park - rich in reptiles and memorials to Gandhiji, Rajaji -- the first Indian governor-general, and Kamaraj -- a great national leader.
The main faunal attraction of this park is rare Indian antelope popularly known as the black buck found nowhere in the world except India.
The incidence of bird life is also equally interesting. Many birds like the king fisher, blue jay, golden backed woodpecker, crowpheasant, flycatcher, robins and many others can be seen here. This is also a sanctuary for the endangered spotted deer, white buck, bonnet monkey etc. |
