Rukmani Devi founded Kalakshetra in 1936 to encourage and arouse the interest of people in the classical dance, Thiruvanmiyur form. The 'school of arts' is located in Thiruvanmiyur beyond the Elliots beach.

Today this temple has developed as an institution devoted to the revival of traditional dance, textile designing and weaving.
