Thousands of pilgrims visit the Meenakshi Temple everyday. It is one of the holiest place of worship.
A striking feature of this temple is an astonishing structure known as the Ayiramkal Mandapam (hall of thousand pillars). The temple is dominated by four enormous towers (gopurams) over the entrance gates. The gopurams are adorned by colourful icons of Gods, Goddesses, animals and mythical figures. The temple has four entrances and occupies an area of around six hecters.
It has also been the centre of Tamil culture, sponsoring literature, art, music and dance over the centuries. The museum called the Temple Art Gallery is located within the complex containing stone and brass images. |
